U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer and a bipartisan group of House colleagues today introduced a bill that would lift the U.S. embargo on Cuba and allow businesses to trade freely with that country while prohibiting taxpayer funds from being used to promote or develop this new market.
"Today marks a new and excitding chapter for the U.S.-Cuba relationship," Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota's 6th Congressional District, said in a press release. He co-sponsored the legislation with U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, R-Fla.
"The American people overwhelminlgly support lifting the Cuba embargo," Emmer said. "Along with the Cuban people, Americans are ready for a fresh start and new opportunities for increasing trade, advancing the cause of human rights and ushering in direly needed reforms."
The United States and Cuba restored full diplomatic relations last week, ending half a century of official shunning of the Comunist-led country.
